Glacier Bay National Park is truly one of the most beautiful and amazing places you will ever visit.

Set in a steep fjord at the far northern end of Alaska’s Inside Passage, Glacier Bay is a magical place, where the steep, lush sides of the fjord rise up seemingly endlessly, decorated with literally thousands of waterfalls.

The peaks surrounding this fjord are some of the tallest in North America, rising up over 15,000 feet, lending this place a sense of sheer peace, isolation, and majesty.

On the day our ship entered the Glacier Bay National Park fjord on my first trip to Alaska, a thick overcast hung over the bay, clinging to the sides of the cliffs and giving the place an almost mystical feel, as if the waterfalls along the sides of the fjord were literally plunging out of the misty clouds.

Only two large cruise ships per day are allowed to enter the pristine waters of Glacier Bay, due to the abundance of delicate marine life in this preserve.

Therefore, when you are in the bay, you might well not see another ship for miles, further enhancing its sense of isolation and tranquility.

I really can’t say enough about this wonderful place, which is perhaps the most beautiful and awe-inspiring location I have ever visited.

When you reach the end of the fjord, you are treated to the sight of vast glaciers, composed of an almost translucent blue ice, winding down in self-carved valleys from the mountains above.

Seeing the glaciers break apart or “calve”, sending huge chunks of ice plummeting into the bay waters below is simply an awesome sight.

Perhaps the one frustration of a cruise into Glacier Bay is that you only get to spend a few hours in this place. If you are like me, you will want to go back and spend much more time exploring this magnificent preserve.

For those who seek a more intimate connection with Glacier Bay National Park, several options are available.

Airplane shore excursions are available during cruise stops in Skagway and Juneau, allowing passengers the rare pleasure of seeing the breathtaking fjord and glaciers from above.

Combination pane and boat tours are also available, letting passengers spend an entire day up close and personal with the glaciers.

Of course, if you are like me and really want to get to know the park, the best way is to return for a stay at the Glacier Bay Lodge, located at the base of the 15,320 foot Mount Fairweather.

This rustic accommodation serves as a wonderful base to explore the park and is accessible via Alaska Airlines commuter jets from Juneau and air taxi service from Skagway and Haines.

Spending time alone in this natural wonderland is both amazing and unbelievably tranquil.

Sea kayaking might just be the best way to explore the ins and outs of the Glacier Bay National Park shoreline.

The lodge runs a 150 seat catamaran, and guests can take kayaks with them on the boat for a small fee.

Whatever amount of time you spend here, you too are bound to fall in love with this magnificent place.

Ketchikan, Alaska is a quaint town near the southern end of Alaska’s Inside Passage. If your Alaskan Cruise begins in either Vancouver, Seattle, or San Francisco, odds are, your first stop will be in the island town of Ketchican.

On my first Alaska vacation, after two days cruising along the beautiful Vancouver Island and the Canadian coast, I was more than ready to get out and explore this incredible region when our ship docked at Ketchikan.

From the docks, it is a short walk to the downtown area known as Creek Street, where historic wooden shops overhang a crystal-clear stream.

If you arrive in late summer, the stream will be teaming with huge salmon on their way to spawn.

This is truly an amazing sight, as the creek is so crowded with salmon that you could literally step from one to another.

If you are like me, the one day you have to spend in Ketchikan on your cruise will be just enough time to wet your whistle, and you will want to return to this amazing area again to explore more and take advantage of all this area has to offer.

If you do return, a great way is to take a ferry from Washington State.

The Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System originates in Bellingham, Washington, a short drive north of Seattle. These ferries provided the easiest access to Ketchikan and all of the Alaskan Inside Passage.

It’s also the gateway to the natural wonders of the Yukon, so you’ll have plenty of great shore excursions to choose from at this port.

Finding the right Alaska cruise shore excursion at each port can really enhance your overall cruise experience.

After all, you can see some incredible stuff from the ship, but it’s when you get off the boat and explore that you experience the “real” Alaska.

The tours and adventures available in Skagway range from basic sightseeing to some of the most thrilling and exciting adventures you will ever experience.

The following are my picks for the best excursions and tours in the town of Skagway.

SKAGWAY EXCURSIONSVALLEY OF THE EAGLES TOUR - This tour takes you to a river and lake where often literally hundreds of magnificent bald eagles can be seen feeding, especially during salmon spawning season. Brown (grizzly) bears also frequent this area. Along the way, as you follow the fjord to Haines, you can see whales, orcas and other wonderful sea life. The trip usually includes a nature walk and lunch.

YUKON 4×4 WILDERNESS TOUR - An exciting off-road adventure into the wilds of the beautiful Yukon territory. This tour follows the path of the gold rush pioneers, up White Pass and into the Yukon. Bears and mountain goats are very common in this area. You’ll pass stunning turquoise alpine lakes and stop at a spot where, on a clear day, you can see 100 miles into the most rugged and beautiful terrain in North America. A stop in the famous gold rush town of Carcross is included, as is lunch. [NOTE: A passport or ID and birth certificate are required to enter Canada].

WHITE PASS RAIL TOUR - This is an incredibly popular Alaska cruise shore excursion. You take the historic White Pass rail into the Yukon Territory. This rail line dates back to 1900 and passes through incredible scenery, including lakes, forest, and mountains. A second version of the trip allows adventurous visitors to take the train up and bike back down through the amazing scenery to Skagway.

EAGLE PRESERVE RAFT TRIP - This tour starts with a scenic ferry ride along a fjord to neighboring Haines. The rafting trip heads along smooth rivers into the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home to almost 4,000 bald eagles. The scenery is breathtaking, and the eagles are amazing. This really is a great adventure tour for adults and families.

So those are my picks for the best tours and adventures in Skagway.

But even if you just get off the boat and spend the afternoon exploring the town, I think you will really enjoy yourself.

The shops and restaurants on the main street are quite good, and there are several fun historic sights to visit too.

The best part is, it’s all within easy walking distance of the docks - the ships literally pull right up to the small downtown area.

So whatever Alaska cruise shore excursion you pick, you will enjoy your time in Skagway. It’s really a wonderful little town.

I think that some of the best Alaska shore excursions are those available in Juneau.

I found Juneau to have a surprisingly Alpine feel to it.

Juneau’s location, in a valley of sorts between two steep mountains, reminded me of Innsbruck, Austria.

Of course, the major difference here is that Juneau is located on a salt water channel, so you can see orcas and sea lions from downtown - it’s really quite amazing.

What’s even more incredible is that the enormous Mendenhall Glacier is so close to downtown - in fact, it’s within the city limits.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADVENTUREWith the glacier, the Juneau Icefields, Tracy Arm Fjord, and Glacier Bay National Park, Juneau is really an adventure seeker’s paradise.

There really are Alaska shore excursions for everyone in Juneau, from families to young adults to seniors.

No matter what your age or physical abilities, you can find several Alaska shore excursions to choose from.

These excursions allow you to get up close and personal with some of the most amazing natural scenery anywhere.

The following is a list of what I think are the best Juneau, Alaska shore excursions.

THE BEST JUNEAU EXCURSIONSGLACIER TREKS - The Mendenhall glacier is the only active glacier within the municipal limits of any U.S. city. It is a short 15 ride from the center of downtown, and numerous companies offer excursions to explore this glacier and the adjacent Juneau Icefields. Glacier treks range in difficulty from moderate to extreme, and all require a helicopter ride to a remote location atop the glacier.

MENDENHALL LAKE FLOAT TRIP - This excursion allows you to float amongst the small icebergs in the lake at the base of the 150 foot high glacier, then float down the moderate rapids of the river leading from the lake. For all ages, and equipment is included.

TRACY ARM FJORD GLACIER CRUISE - Cruise this magnificent Fjord, which rivals Glacier Bay in sheer scenic beauty. The fjord has sheer rock walls some 2,000 feet high, with hundreds of waterfalls decorating the cliffs. At the end of the fjord is the most spectacular sight of all, the massive Sawyer glacier. This is a really amazing place and a trip I highly recommend.

DOG SLED TOUR - This tour provides a rare and thrilling opportunity to ride a dog sled on snow in the middle of summer! A short helicopter ride takes you to the dog base camp, where you meet the huskies and prepare for your one-hour dog sled ride on the glacier. It’s a thrilling, amazing ride you’ll never forget.

MT. ROBERTS TRAMWAY - This might well be the cheapest tour you take on your trip. The tramway base is located right across from the cruise ship docks. The tram cars take you up some 1800 feet to Mt. Roberts, where some of the most breathtaking views in Alaska await you. You can see across Juneau and the Gastineau Channel to the surrounding snowcapped peaks. And the hiking trails accommodate people of all levels of fitness. Bring a picnic and spend an amazing day in the Alpine forest.

RAINFOREST CANOPY ZIP LINE TOUR - This is a really cool tour, especially if you have teens or young adults in your family or group. You get to experience the lush temperate rainforest from high up in the canopy on “zip lines” and rope bridges. This tour allows you to see the rainforest from a unique and thrilling perspective. Not for those with a fear of heights, but for everyone else looking for adventure, it’s a great tour.

Those are just my favorites of the literally dozens of Alaska cruise excursions and tours available in Juneau.

JUNEAU ON A BUDGETIf you are looking to just relax and do some shopping, downtown Juneau is just a short shuttle or cab ride away (or you can even walk, if you are so inclined.

But if you do stay in town, I highly recommend the Mt. Roberts Tramway.

It’s relatively inexpensive, and it will give you the best view of your cruise.

Also, cheap bus rides are available to the Mendenhall glacier. They drop you off at the visitor center and give you time to see the lake and the glacier, and likeley even a bear or two fishing in the stream below.

So there definitely are some great inexpensive options in Juneau for the budget conscuous.

However, as with all Alaska ports, if you have your heart set on a specific activity or tour, you really are better off planning in advance and booking your Alaska shore excursions before they sell out.

Alright, so here are my very top Alaska cruise tips - the things you really should know before you head off on any Alaskan cruise.

An Alaska cruise is really every bit as Amazing as you probably have heard. But most people have very little idea what to expect once they get in Alaska.

What will the weather be like? Does it snow in the summer there? What should you wear? What should you pack? Will you see polar bears? Igloos? Well, read on, because I’ll answer all these questions and more.

So, in no particular order, here are my top Alaska cruise tips:

Bring layers of clothing - It can get very chilly in the mornings in coastal Alaska, and can remain cool even into the early afternoon, especially on cloudy, misty, or rainy days. But the sun can and often does burn through the clouds in the afternoons, and suddenly it can go from quite cool to quite comfortable, so it’s great to have a rain proof windbreaker over a sweater, with a short sleeve shirt underneath for when the sun comes out. Jeans are great for on-deck glacier and fjord viewing.

Bring sneakers! - or running shoes or tennis shoes or some sort of boots with good traction. It can get a bit slippery on deck when it is misty, and the odds are, you will spend a lot of time on deck, sun or no sun, viewing the jaw-dropping scenery. Sneakers or similarly comfortable shoes are also perfect for many shore excursions.

Bring binoculars - If you forget these, you will be kicking yourself again and again. From passing whales to wildlife on the shore to eagles in the sky above, there is constantly something to look at with binoculars. They also are great for glacier viewing, allowing you to see the glaciers breaking up in fascinating detail. Buy a cheap pair if you have to or borrow them from a friend, but whatever you do, remember to bring them.

Plan your shore excursions ahead of time - Investigate your shore excursions online. Not only will you be able to spend the time to find the very best excursions to match you fitness level and interests, but you can also find the best prices this way (you can save by cutting out the middle man and booking directly through a tour company), which brings me to my next tip…

Match your shore excursions to your port arrivals and departures - This might sound obvious, but it is vitally important. You’d be amazed how many people end up staying in port past the time of their ship’s departure, only to have to pay for a helicopter trip to the ship or the next port. This can be VERY expensive. So make sure your excursions finish well in advance of the time your ship will leave that port - of all my Alaska cruise tips, this one will definitely save you the most hassle.

Book a cabin with a balcony - they cost more, and those cheaper prices for the inside cabins sure can be tempting, but of all cruises, you want a room with a balcony on an Alaskan cruise. The scenery is simply amazing, and you will never have to miss any of it if you have a view. Trust me, this is well worth the extra cost, if you can at all afford it.

So those are my top Alaska cruise tips. And in case you’re still wondering, you probably won’t see any polar bears or igloos (they’re much farther north), and you definitely won’t see any penguins (they’re at the SOUTH pole!). But you’ll see tons of incredible wildlife and the most amazing scenery pretty much anywhere.

Alaska offers a wide range of opportunities for fun and adventure while on your cruise. Many cruisers choose activities before and after the cruise. Alaska cruises represent a great value - combining your transportation, meal, entertainment and sightseeing expenses into one reasonable fare. Alaska is a beautiful state with majestic views of mountains, glaciers, and wildlife. Cameras are a must, along with lots of film.

Cost with an Alaskan Trip

Travel costs are largely dependent on the time of the year, and every travel destination has its high, low and shoulder seasons. Knowing the seasons for the destination of your choice is a great way to enjoy wonderful travel on a budget. Travelers who have special diet needs can make a request especially for those who are vegetarians and going on a diet. Travel in the company of lifelong Alaskans with over 45 years experience in these waters. Intimate explorations aboard the Sundance are available by charter only and offer an authentic alternative to other Alaskan cruises.

Alaskan Cruise Adventures

Experiencing Alaska adventure travel is a must for everyone and, fortunately, is a fairly inexpensive vacation choice. In addition to the magnificent beauty of the area, many people come to Alaska for hiking, hunting, fishing and so many other exciting outdoor activities. Experience Alaska in style via cruise, land and train in this spectacular glacial setting.

What Tourist would love on an Alaskan Cruise

Tourists can visit many museums, towns and tours to get a better idea of Alaska and its rich cultural background. The Alaska Native Heritage Center is a popular stop where people can look deeper into the indigenous tribes of the state, as is the Inupiat Heritage Center in Barrow.

Wildlife abounds both on land and sea. Unexcelled panoramas of calving icebergs, mountains and ocean. Wildlife is in abundance and there are many forms of fishing on clean under worked lakes. Recommended fishing activities include halibut and of course salmon and your cruise tour organizer should have information on how you can be booked onto these excursions.

In summary, Alaska cruises are not only meant for seniors but it should be something we do at least once in our lifetime. With the many views and things to see one can’t suffer boredom.
Most people dream of going on that incredible vacation, the one they will always remember. One of these great vacations is the Alaska cruise and tour trip. Going on an Alaska trip is incomparable to anything else you have ever done. Imagine seeing some of the most incredible nature scenes, views that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.
While considering a cruise, one of the most vital things to be considered is the itinerary. Some of the most popular cruise destinations are the Mexican Riviera, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and the Bahamas. These offer a very different experience, particularly for beginners.

On the other hand, connoisseurs of cruises look for something that is very different from the experience offered by the previously mentioned cruise destinations. If they visit the same places they visited earlier, albeit on another cruise ship, the element of surprise and the unknown is absent.

If you fall under this category, and are seeking a cruise out of the ordinary, then an Alaskan cruise holiday is right up your alley. You can hope to see new vistas, new people and cultures and other things which will leave an indelible mark in your heart.

In case you are wiling to try something different, go on the Alaskan cruise. It’s an ideal destination for a long cruise as well as a short expedition.

Alaska occupies 570,374 sq. miles of land and is the biggest of the states of the United States of America. It is large enough to completely cover Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Kansas and Colorado. In spite of its large dimensions, its one of the least populated regions on the planet.

Alaska is surrounded by natural borders like rivers, streams and mountains. One of the biggest draws of Alaska is its glaciers, which form an ideal backdrop for a cruise. A cruise along its long coastline will enable you to fully appreciate its beauty.

If you choose a cruise with Glacier Bay as a part of the itinerary, you will be rewarded with the site of glaciers calving. The process of the glaciers breaking off from the cliff of ice and falling into the ocean is termed as calving. This happens many times an hour if the glacier’s large enough.

Watching glaciers calving may induce you to go and touch the ice. Luckily, some cruise lines offer you the services of a helicopter and hiking on ice, which enables you to get on to the glaciers. This experience has no other equivalent in the world.

While on the Alaskan cruise, you may want to visit Tracy Arm Fjord as well. This is a branch of the sea which stretches inland for a few miles. Here, you can truly understand the majesty of the granite cliffs, and the waterfalls cascading off the cliffs from a different perspective.

The ideal time to go on an Alaskan cruise is from May to September. Here, you will experience much lower temperatures than in the south during summer.

The most famous Alaskan cruises are the Inside Passage cruise and the Gulf of Alaska cruise. The former goes through Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan and lasts for about one week. On this cruise, various supplementary excursions are possible as well. The latter is also called as the Glacier Route Cruise. On this cruise, you can visit Glacier Bay and at times, the Hubbard Glacier as well.

Immaterial of which cruise you choose, all cruise lines will give you the required flexibility on your cruise. Smaller vessels are available, usually with a capacity of about 150, to help you get closer to the glaciers without doing a Titanic.

Everything depends on the choices you make. If you are of an adventurous nature, you may want to book a smaller cruise ship even if it costs more. On the other hand, if you’ll be satisfied with only sightseeing, then a larger ship is preferable. Whatever you choose, remember to expect the unexpected.

Everything is right before your eyes - what Alaska is and what it can offer you. Once you begin the cruise, you will never remember your worries. Happy cruising!

Alaska is known as “Ice World”. It is a beautiful place which offers mountains full of icebergs and glaciers. It is also some place where bears and whales live and it’s a place which gives breathtaking scenery of Mother Nature’s beauty. It’s also a great place for cruises giving the maximum of both the worlds, from the natural one to the urban.

Many cruisers who might have experienced the nature of Alaska would tell that they like their experience there. The mountains are very high. The different type of animals which is possessed by Alaska is a wonder for watching, these are animals which can’t be in some other places.

Alaska’s boarder has a great collection of grass which gives a mystical colour. Many see Alaska as one ice blanketed land, these kind of grasses give a surprise to all. The coastline gives a great view of the sparkling ice. The very deep water flow and the out coming colour is blue. The sky would be reflected by the glimpse of sun. The fields containing wild grass and flower are very stunning.

The cruising ship would automatically park in a place known as “Town of Tourists”. It’s a place where these ships unload their passengers. It’s a small town that has some 600 or more as its population.

Normally, the tourists would outnumber the local’s population. In many cases, the tourists ratio to the locals would be 6:1. These local people would appreciate the tourist’s presence as they give more livelihoods for their community.

Getting the very best deals for Alaskan cruises is a good opportunity. For discussing further here are some basic steps to get discounts over Alaskan cruises.

- The first thing to be done is the arrangement of a cruise in some off seasons. If possible be away from some peak seasons of these cruise vacations. It might be better if you may schedule the time 3 to 4 weeks later from the peak season. For example, an Alaskan travelling cruise has its season on July and on September. Having one Alaskan vacation cruise before to these dates would surely save cash.

- Choose the kind of cruise to be used. There are some travelling agencies which are based in Alaska which pushes a single line for various reasons. It might be great if you do some homework and a kind of research first. Comparing these shipping line fees and these services would save cash.

- If possible never be misled because of the honey-sweet publicity which promises very much for nothing. Speaking with the correct travel agency might give important information which can result in significant saving of money.

- Have one Alaskan vacation cruise’s quotation which comprises all the port fees and also the tax revenue. If the travelling agency fails to tell that information, look out for another good agency. There mustn’t be any hidden fees and some uncertain collections. Be aware of the port fee which runs to hundreds of dollars for every person. The port fees should be very much stable and also consistent.

- Get one inside cabin. Usually, the inside cabin would be the cheapest. Besides that, the inside cabin would also give comfort for the vacation goer. Remember, Alaska’s weather is cold, the inside temperature would be much warmer and is comfortable.

Remember to avoid some stresses in the Alaskan cruising, having booked for two weeks before leaving is recommended. Check out a list of these cruise trips for Alaska. Always remember, Alaska’s beauty must never be disturbed. Respecting its nature would make the cruising more enjoyable.
